Ely
The historic city of Ely is full of charm and beauty and is home to one of the most magnificent cathedrals in England. Nestled in the Fen countryside, this small city in East Cambridgeshire is your ideal day visit or short break location. Whether it is a tranquil, peaceful retreat you are looking for or an inspiring, invigorating visit then the bustling city of Ely surrounded by dramatic countryside has it all.
Visit Ely Cathedral and join the thousands of visitors that come each year from all over the world. It gives a vision of continuity and worship down the centuries. Lovers of architecture will rejoice in the many different styles, blending to make the whole. The Cathedral is also home to the only national museum dedicated to Stained Glass. If it's history you're interested in then Ely Museum, housed in the city's old gaol, is an excellent place to start.
Ely's most famous historical resident was of course Oliver Cromwell. The Cromwell family left sometime in 1647, but you can still visit their house, which now doubles as the local Tourist Information Centre.
Ely has a beautiful waterside area, which is an attraction within itself, where you can enjoy a boat trip with Fenland Cruises, riverside walks, explore the many cafes and antique shops, visit the Babylon Art Gallery or listen to music in Jubilee Gardens.
