Activities in Cambridgeshire
You’ll find all the big names and exclusive boutiques in Peterborough and Cambridge for shopping, whilst Ely is the place to seek out unusual antiques, crafts and other specialities. Join the bustle of market day and pick up a bargain or two at traditional markets in the cities or in Huntingdon, St Ives, Wisbech, March or Whittlesey. Indulge your senses at the colourful flower market at St Neots or seek out fresh local produce at farmers’ markets throughout the county.
If you are after something more exciting, then you could head for Grafham Water and try windsurfing or sailing, or hire a bike for off-road cycling. You could also get on your bike at Wisbech and follow the Apples and Ale trail to discover ancient sea banks, historic fen villages and miles of flourishing orchards. For even more excitement, Go Ape in Thetford Forest – just over the county border. Here you can negotiate rope bridges, tarzan swings and zip slides high up in the treetops!
Alternatively, Linton Zoo makes for a fascinating day out. Set in sixteen acres of beautiful gardens, children can come face-to-face with rare and exotic creatures such as tigers, leopards and lions while also learning about conservation issues.
At Shepreth Wildlife Park, there is an equally impressive array of animals including big cats, monkeys, wolves and deer.
For something far more sedate, why not pack a picnic and go for a hike at Wicken Fen? It is the last remaining pocket of undrained fen and you can see how the landscape looked long ago before it was drained to provide some of the best farmland in the country. The wetlands of the Fens attract huge numbers of migrating birds and swans and at Welney Wetland Centre, you’ll be fascinated by nature and the changes each season brings.
